Father’s and Sons

By Gus Ornstein

Can you imagine having had a long major league baseball playing career, becoming the manager of a major league baseball team and being named manager of the year, then becoming the first base coach for the most storied franchise in major league baseball, and then having to play and coach against your son. Tony enjoyed a tremendous career as a catcher for the Pirates, Cardinals, Red Sox, Indians, and White Sox and then went on to manage the Kansas City Royals before becoming the first base coach of the NY Yankees. Tony’s son Tony Jr is now the starting shortstop for the Royals, and we spoke to Tony about playing against his own son and how difficult that is for him and the mixed emotions he feels during those games as he is torn between wanting to see his son perform well and wanting his team to be victorious.
